Episode 66 - Annie Talks with Christine Gambito | aka ‘HappySlip’ | Filipino-American Comedian, Actress, YouTube Personality

Christine Gambito, also known by her screen name "HappySlip", is a Filipino American internet personality, actress, and comedian.  Her videos have been viewed over 100 million times across the web. She started performing comedy at a young age when her mom would request for her to do impressions of the family. Other cousins had to play piano. She had to stand up and do "imitation on demand". Unbeknownst to Christine, those were her early days of stand up comedy.

Loving to create stories and skits, Christine wrote, performed, and edited her one woman show which started on YouTube in 2006 under "HappySlip". (Her mom used to remind her to wear a half slip under dresses and skirts. Pronouncing it as "hap eslip", Christine assumed the term was "happy slip" all through childhood until her friends in school asked if she had a sad slip as well.) She decided to use this as a screen name not only for the funny childhood memory,  but also based on the hope that people would "slip into happiness" when they watch her videos.

He’s on a mission to change the way people understand their pain and their ability to get out of it. Kris Traynor shares his expertise in audio engineering and tips for aspiring recording studio producers on how to get started in the audio recording industry.

As we kick off 2019, many people have included as part of their New Year’s Resolutions: to make more money.

Now if you’re one of those people, have you asked yourself: How do I go about making more money?

Let me ask you this: Do have a side hustle? Do you have multiple steams of income? Do you have a hobby or a passion that you’ve always felt could turn into a small business? Most people work 9 to 5 jobs and have little time to do much else, let alone have time to turn your passions or hobbies into a side hustle.

My guest on this episode, Eric Rosenberg, was one of those people who started his career like everyone else. He went to business school, graduated, and got a job at a bank. A short while later, after deciding this particular bank wasn't for him and spending a few months as a restaurant server, he jumped into corporate finance and accounting for the next 10 years.

While working a full time job, Eric started freelancing as a blogger and slowly building income. He started making small profits at the time, but then he started getting $25 and $35 per article on a regular basis. And then his income grew exponentially, earning $40,000 per year on this side hustle in 2015. So in 2016, with a 6 month old baby and stay-at-home wife, he quit his high paying, stable job in finance to write blog posts from home.

This was a huge and scary risk, yes, but it turned out to be the right decision. He went from a part time blogger to a full time blogger. Now, as a freelancer earning a six-figure income, living the lifestyle he had always wanted, he is focusing on building his own brand all while continuing to earn big from my diverse client base.

I love Eric’s mantra as it relates to work life balance which is “Live to live, not live to work.”

Are you inspired by Eric? Are you inspired to go FIND YOUR ICE CREAM? I know I am!

My guests on this episode are The Lee Sisters! As you’ve heard they are launching their first-ever CD. I’m so honored to have them both on this show and I cannot wait for you all to hear about how they got started. You’ll even get a sneak peek at two songs from the CD later on in the show concluding with the lightning round. So you’ll want to listen all the way to the end for that.

First, I would like to shout to out Uncle Kamaka Brown, the creative director of the Sandwich Islands Network Radio, 24-7 online streaming of island contemporary music at V93FM.com for the introduction to Lise more than a year ago. Shout out to Nate Yaris for helping with the music and of course Red Light Fever Studios in Tujunga, Calif. and the masterwork of engineer-extraordinaire Kristofer Traynor.

Sisters in real life, the girls have been performing throughout California and Hawaii since 2015.

The Lee Sisters’ ukulele adventure began in January 2015 when they were invited by Kanile'a Ukulele to play at the NAMM show in Anaheim, Calif., the world’s largest music convention.  Since then, they've been invited to perform at dozens of festivals and events throughout SoCal, including the Heritage of Aloha Festival in Santa Fe Springs (where Lise was the winner of their 2015 ukulele competition).

In Hawaii, they have performed as guests of Bryan Tolentino and Herb Ohta Jr. at the Kani Ka Pila Grille, the Moana Terrace at Marriott Waikiki as guests of Alan Akaka and the Keawe Ohana Show, and most recently at Disney’s Aulani Resort as guests of The Makaha Sons.

The Lee Sisters recorded two original ukulele pieces for an EP released by Sandwich Islands Network (SIN) Radio entitled “California 808,” and recently completed their own original album called “Uke Shoes.”

Surprisingly, they have only been playing ukulele for five years…and are self taught!

My guest on this episode is Maura Sweeney, an author, a renowned international speaker, a highly-sought after guest for her engaging demeanor and thought-provoking perspectives, and has been featured in over 300 media outlets including the BBC Radio with Host Simon Hoban and NBC TV’s syndicated Daytime show.

Maura had spent a decade in corporate management, raised and home schooled a daughter and helped her husband launch and grow a successful computer firm. But with a daughter getting ready for college, Maura pulled out all the stops and decided to become globally influential -- promoting a better, happier and more authentic world, from the inside out.

Maura is the host of a successful podcast called “Living Happy Inside Out,” and was named the “Ambassador of Happiness.”

I love what Maura said about giving yourself permission and take steps that are comfortable for you in pursuit of and living a happy life.

Don’t be afraid to question often, question better, and question sooner. The key word is QUESTION. Ask questions, learn early, yes, we all make mistakes but learn from them.

My takeaway from my conversation with Maura is: There has never been another you. There will never be another you. Step out and become the best you, you have always wanted to be!

In this episode, my guest, Roni Lambrecht, shares her story about losing her only son, Dalton in an ATV accident. He was 15 years old at the time.

Together with her husband John, Roni's world would change forever. It was through their grieving process, that led Roni to write two books:

Roni says PARENTING AT YOUR BEST, which was named the GOLD MOM'S CHOICE AWARD, was written from a completely different perspective of any other parenting book ever written before: from that of a mother looking back over her life as a parent after loss, sharing the things we did right and the regrets that often sneak up on us.

Roni, a firm believer of paying it forward, shares a heartfelt story about a random act of kindness.

Join the Random Act of Kindness movement and pay it forward in honor of your own loved ones, the way that Roni has done and continues to do on the regular for her son Dalton.

Shawn Anderson is a #1 ranked motivational author, unlimited thinker, and lifetime entrepreneur with a history of inspiring others. A seven-time author, Shawn is also the creator of Extra Mile Day...a day recognizing the power we each have to create positive change when we "go the extra mile" (established on November 1, 2017, where 527 cities made the declaration and recognized local extra-mile heroes).
Shawn walks his talk. Besides having inspired tens of thousands through his speaking and writing (including an inspirational speaking tour in the Philippines attended by 20,000 attendees), Shawn’s built a million dollar company, pedaled a bike solo across the U.S. (twice), and created adventures in 45+ countries including having walked border-to-border across six (England, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy and 750 miles around Shikoku, Japan.)
Still...he believes his greatest adventures and success are waiting to be lived.
About Extra Mile Day & Extra Mile America History:
In 2009, in order to symbolize the "go the extra mile" message, Shawn Anderson (a non-bicyclist) pedaled 4,000 miles ocean-to-ocean, interviewed 200 people along the way whom had been identified as having gone the extra mile, and then gave $10,000 of his own money to the people and organizations whose stories most inspired him. As a part of that cross-country extra-mile ride, Extra Mile Day (11/1)......a day recognizing the capacity we each have to create positive change in our families, our organizations, our communities and ourselves when we "go the extra mile"... was created with 23 inaugural cities. The momentum of this unique day has continued to build each year since, and on November 1, 2017, 527 mayors and cities made the "Extra Mile Day" declaration and recognized the value of the "go the extra mile" spirit in their community.

My guest on this episode is the first of many more guests in the brand new series called "AMAZING ATHLETES." Isaac Wenrich is a professional baseball player on the Road Warriors team in the Atlantic League. The Atlantic League is an independent baseball league in the mid-Atlantic and Northeastern Unites States spanning the nation from Lancaster, Pennsylvania; York, Pennsylvania; Central Islip, New York; New Britain, Connecticut; Bridgewater, New Jersey; Waldorf, Maryland; and one team from Sugarland, Texas.

Originally from Reading, Pennsylvania he moved to Phoenix, Arizona four years ago where he currently resides.

In 2016, while preparing for a coaching lesson with one of his students, Isaac suffered a heart attack. His student, Nate Boyer's quick action in calling 911 and applying chest compressions helped to save Isaac's life.

One thing I'd like to point out is Isaac suffered that heart attack in March 2016 and returned to playing baseball in late May the same year. I think it's absolutely amazing! Isaac and Nate have a bond for life and it goes without saying that Nate was in the right place at the right time. Isaac's recovery speaks volumes about his will to live, his will to overcome, and his passion to pursue his dreams. I love what Isaac said, to "chase the passion as long as it' s in your heart." He says ever since the incident, he never takes another day on this earth for granted. Truly amazing and truly an amazing athlete!

As we continue with my favorite series - the ENTREPRENEUR series, my next guest is Terri Mendez, someone I had known for many many years. We were good friends back in junior high school and then into high school, and as the years passed, life happened, we went our separate ways, and eventually, we lost touch with one another. But through the power of social media, we were able to reconnect and through another mutual friend, I found out about her business.

Terri and her family moved from California to Texas, and in 2017 she started her business. I love Terri's story because it demonstrates her resilience, her tenacity, her drive, and determination. I think we can all relate in some ways to the ebbs and flows of change, relocation, starting over in a new environment, and finding, as Terri says, 'your own HAPPIE.'

You could you feel the happiness exuding from Terri. Can you relate to her story in some way? Are you starting over in a brand new location? New job? New school?

Here are my takeaways from talking with TERRI MENDEZ:

    1) Utilize your support system. I touched on this subject in another podcast episode with Jasmine Wallace of Ku'uipo Creations who did the same thing. She had her family -- her village -- to lean on. Just like Terri, she had her family too -- her village to support her during her move and getting acclimated to the new area.

    2) NEVER STOP GROWING: Terri mentions this during our conversation and I really love this mantra. Terri expanded her passion, her love for art and crafting, and turned it into a thriving business. She embedded herself in her community, linked arms with like-minded individuals, and found what truly makes her happy.

I am so thankful that Terri shared her story. Because, if you're like me, sometimes, you feel "alone" in your struggles -- especially as an entrepreneur or startup business owner, but knowing others out there encountered the same scenarios you went through or are going through, is very therapeutic. I strongly believe we can all learn from and be empowered by one another, and then turn around, pay it forward and be the same positive influence on someone else. Love it!

ABOUT TERRI MENDEZ and FIND YOUR HAPPIE BY TRES BEAU:
Terri Mendez is the business owner of Find Your Happie by TREs Beau, an online home decor
store & more (and soon to be storefront). She also teaches art and cooking classes using her
    specialized product lines.

Before starting her retail business, Terri spent over 25 years as an Insurance Broker for a
multinational financial services company. She also had her own floral business where she
specialized in weddings. After her spouse’s recent job relocation from CA to TX, Find Your
Happie by TREs Beau was born; a family founded business created by Terese, Regine, &
Estelle, who share the love of art. aiming to create something that makes the world a better place to live in.

Find Your Happie by TREs Beau designs bring happiness into your environment by using
inspiring quotes, eye-catching designs, and even "functional" theme creations. They believe in
the concept of reducing, reusing, recycling, and upcycling to conserve the earth's resources.
They also believe in "Pay it Forward" where they will donate 5% proceeds of your purchase to
various charities on a permanent basis.

    Fun Facts:
    ● Find Your Happie by TREs Beau was created in February 2017 by stumbling along a
great sale on "cabinet doors" from a lovely nearby Texas carpenter who needed to clear
out his work area. Once they started to share their ideas with how to "upcycle" the doors,
    their business was born!
    ● Their website background is such a breathtaking view and such a hidden gem located in
Frisco, Texas which brings so much happiness; thus the name "Find Your Happie".
    ● The phrase: "TREs Beau" translates to "very beautiful" in French, which describes this
lovely background. However, the letters in TREs are symbolic of their first name initials,
    Terese, Regine & Estelle

As we continue with the entrepreneur series, I also feature entertainers, performers, musicians and creative artists and we talk about projects their working on and so on. My next guest is not only a successful entrepreneur, but he is also a creative artist, an award-winning travel and landscape photographer based in Los Angeles, California -- ANDREI DUMAN. Originally from Romanian and transplanted in the United States, Andrei moved to New York for several years before settling in LA where he currently lives with his wife.

He began his career as a semi-professional tennis player before moving on to investment banking. He has visited well over 80 countries so far and while on his travels, Andrei has captured some of the most spectacular photos you will ever see filled with unbelievable vibrant, stunning, rich and beautiful colors. His photos are clean, powerful and evocative: encouraging the viewer to look beyond what is right in front of them to the scale and breadth of what surrounds us.

Andrei also holds unique workshops -- get this, on location in some of the most exciting and exotic locations as well as 1-on-1 private instructions. And...guess what? You get to select the DESTINATION!

You will love hearing about all these beautiful countries and locations he's visited. I tell you, I live vicariously through him. I can only dream of places like these -- and yet, he's made his dream come true! So so so exciting!

My takeaways from talking with Andrei are:

    1) Never be afraid to try something new or something different. Take a chance, be adventurous and ambitious. Step out of your comfort zone. This not only applies to photography or landscape photography but EVERY aspect of life, right? It may not be what you expected -- you could have a vision of how things will play out in your mind, but until you actually put words and thoughts into action, you will never know if it's successful. If it fails, so what...it fails...learn from it, regroup, revamp, and go back out and do it again.

    2) Get out and explore: You may have a scenario of what you think you're meant to do in life, whether that's pursuing a career in technology, teaching, or a mechanic -- exploring options can lead to surprising passions. In Andrei's case, he started as a semi-professional tennis player but through his travels as a professional athlete, he discovered his passion for photography and now he's an award-winning, sought-after, in-demand travel and landscape photographer.

I hope you found his story inspirational and motivational! I know I certainly did!

As we continue with the ENTREPRENEUR series, I wanted to highlight a dynamic woman business-owner. This person is someone whose promo appeared on my Facebook newsfeed. I was drawn to her almost instantaneously due largely in part by her photos from the beach, from exotic-looking places, and secondly by her story. And you know how much I love a good story!

My guest on this episode is Joan Dizon -- a wife, mom, traveler, & entrepreneur. She is the CEO of 'Living The Daydream.'

Joan says she admits to forgetting to wash her face at night and usually wears the same denim shorts 4 days in a row, and has a new addiction for surfing.

Joan is currently in the beautiful islands of the Philippines and mentors women entrepreneurs & teaches online classes.

My takeaways from talking with Joan are:

    1) Have a vision, Visualize your goal, and Vocalize and share your Vision with others. As you've heard, Joan shared what she wanted, and what she was striving for in life with her family. She shared this vision with her family, friends, and within her network and she is certainly meeting her goals to this day and Living the Daydream.

    2) Stay laser focused -- multitasking is great and for most women (and some men, too) we are great at multitasking, but if you stay focused on one thing at a time - you become more productive and more efficient.

    3) Start your day off with meditation. Whether that be prayer, devotionals, journaling, outlining your day, or reflecting on the past few days -- starting off your day in quiet time will help set the tone for the rest of the day, and even alleviate stress and anxiety.

    Joan's online classes include:

Living The Daydream Masterclass - Your elixir for a fulfilled life & actualized daydreams

Magnificent Money Multiplier Workshop - Prosperity consciousness & money mindset

Business Creator & Mastery Program - Creating a business that you love and earning what you deserve

My guest on this episode is a very special person who I met toward the end of 2017. You may recognize her name as she was my guest on Episode 12. At the time when we first talked with her, she was currently working on a very special project. So, in this podcast I've asked her back onto the show to talk about her new CD launch and I cannot wait for you to hear all about it.

I'm talking about the beautiful and talented Alissa Hunnicutt who has made a name for herself as a singer/storyteller of alternative folk music. She draws from her acting and musical training to personalize songs with her thoughtful and emotional ukulele arrangements. She especially loves sad songs; so bring a tissue.

Alissa holds a Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music in vocal performance.

She’s also an accomplished puppeteer in all styles of puppetry, having performed at The National Puppetry Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, Great Small Works’ International Toy Theater Festival, Sesame Street, and on the CBS series "Life in Pieces.'

Most recently, she has combined her puppetry and ukulele performing into a single evening of unique entertainment.

I hope you enjoy this episode of Annie Talks and getting to know more about Alissa Hunnicutt.  You can find Alissa Hunnicutt's "Something" album on iTunes, CD Baby, or you can stream it on Spotify. But, remember, you get all the extras and bonus items that Alissa talked about during the show directly when you buy the CD itself. So, I encourage to do that!

My guest on today's episode is Jasmine Wallace, the CEO, and mastermind of
Ku'uipo Creations, a one-stop shop of Polynesian hand-made men and women apparel, as well as other island-inspired products such as hats, coffee mugs, Keike (or children's) apparel, jewelry, hair trinkets, and many other products.

Jasmine, who loves to knit, crochet, and sew utilizes all these skills in creating special one-of-a-kind or hard-to-find items. She also has a passion for soapmaking and creating lip balms and lotions.

I love what she said about taking care of those in your support system because without them we couldn't do what we do best as entrepreneurs. I agree with you Jasmine one-thousand percent! My guest on this episode is Jeff Rojas, an American photographer and an author based in New York City. His primary body of work is advertising and editorial photography that has been published in both Elle and Esquire. Jeff also frequents as a photography instructor. His teaching experience includes platforms like CreativeLive, WPPI, the Photo Plus Expo, Imaging USA and APA.

My guest on this episode is Mike Pecci, a critically acclaimed, award-winning film director. With over 18 years of experience, Mike has cemented a name for himself not only as a photographer and music video director but as an abstractly edgy filmmaker who is undeniably devoted to the art of storytelling. His characters are the faces of his work - passionate, emotional, and distorted stories are the basis for some of Mike's most well-received films.

His ability to touch audiences through his films is a credit to his commitment to understanding humanity. The work has an emotional quality that can both frighten and pull you in, playing off the darkest chasms of the human condition.

So, if you've been listening to my podcast, you may have heard a few episodes where I talked with women entrepreneurs and learned about the power of being your own #bossbabe and #girlboss. The movement is real. The time is now, and more and more women are quitting their 9-to-5 jobs and going into business for themselves.

And if you're one of them, you know the struggles, trials, and tribulations that come with the territory. We often go at it by ourselves or we find out too late what we shoulda, coulda would've done. I know in my own journey toward entrepreneurship, I felt like the lone person on a deserted island without a friend or mentor to call.

Well, as luck would have it, I stumbled on a Facebook group called Women Helping Women Entrepreneurs led by Christina Rowe. There I found my guest on this episode, Michelle McNabb. I messaged her and we bounced ideas off of one another, we brainstormed, and one day, I just asked her to come on my show and talk about herself and her business and here she is!

Michelle is from the east coast, raised in Pennsylvania, recently moved to Southern Maryland, and is in New York City frequently. She’s a wife, dog-mom, and entrepreneur: wedding planner, bridal mentor & corporate event marketing strategist. She enjoys making Vlogs (which are videos for those not in the know) and meeting new people.

Michelle’s expertise is in corporate event marketing. Companies sell business to business or business to consumer however events are people to people connections. Michelle works with sales & marketing teams to build relationships through event strategy to attract, convert, delight and close through organic and event strategies.

Later in the episode, Michelle has a special, exciting and an exclusive announcement and all you listeners are hearing it first on this episode of Annie Talks so stick around to hear that great news!

The one takeaway from this discussion that I recommend to each of you: set goals for yourself and set them early. As you've heard, Michelle had a vision in mind, she knew where she wanted to be by the age of 30, and having met that goal a few years ahead of that target, she now set a new goal for herself. So the moral of the story is set one goal at a time, once you've achieved it, keep going. I love that!

He says, "Comedy is a crazy journey," but for this, he will always be grateful to Comedy and to all his fellow comics.

Sandy focuses on helping people discover the connection between their physical disease and the emotional components underlying the issue.

Using essential oils and especially the Aromatouch Technique, the clinical application of 8 key essential oils and blends, Sandy helps people find natural solutions to their issues and create lifestyle plans for optimal healing.

She is also an active connector collaborating with other holistic practitioners while helping clients find additional healers to support them on their healing journey. You can find Sandy at sandychasteen.com and catch her on FB Live shows where she chats with a wide variety of holistic healers like herself sharing concepts, tips, and tools to help you live your best life ever!

I also wanted to share a very special personal story that happened immediately following my talk with Sandy. We were chit-chatting and one conversation led to another and somehow or another we got onto the subject of my back and muscle ailment that I was experiencing that day.

I pointed to my upper back and told Sandy my symptoms, and within minutes, she went to her library on her desk and pulls out this book, a manual of sorts and opens up to this page that basically described me to a tee. It was an emotional breakthrough for me in that it pinpointed some deeper underlying issues -- and Sandy mentions this throughout the interview, and it really wasn't until that very moment that I realize just precisely what she does.

She rubbed this amazing oil on my right back shoulder blade -- on the affected area. She told me I would start to feel it "working" in a few minutes, and let me tell you -- within minutes, I was feeling this amazing sensation, a tingling, warm, cool sensation and the thing that got me, was the equally amazing scent -- hence the Aromatouch she spoke very highly about. My drive home was relaxing and the rest of that evening was also relaxing. It was quite therapeutic! I only wished that I had my other side, my other shoulder, done at the same time. The point is, the Aromatouch works, the essential oils work! I highly recommend it.

Episode 32 - Annie Talks with Zumba Instructor and Life Coach Melissa Algoso

I met Mel about two years ago while taking one of her Zumba classes at a local 24 Hour Fitness. I absolutely fell in love with her Zumba class and her dance-style. She incorporates many dance “moves” from the ‘80s and ‘90s which is very nostalgic for me and doesn’t feel like “working out.” Her class transports you back in time, rekindles fond ‘old-school’ memories and makes exercising fun.

Hear about Melissa’s background as a professional dancer, thoughts on fitness and teaching, as well as her inspirational message of empowerment.

EPISODE 27 - Annie Talks and Sandwich Islands Network Radio talk with Kumu Hulu Lokelani Reichert and her passion to preserve the art of feather lei pua-making.

Some of you may know that I  am one of the "Krew" members of the SIN Radio at V93FM.com and we were recently honored to be invited to the 8th annual San Diego Ho'olaule'a in De Anza Cove, San Diego, Calif. where we kicked off the very busy, fun and festive Hawaiian festival season.

There was so much to be seen at the Ho'olaule'a from musicians, hula dancers, Tahitian dancers, to food vendors, and Hawaiian product vendors galore.

There were two stages: the main stage where large groups performed and a Kanikapila stage for a more intimate, up close and personal performances by so many other groups.

If you follow my YouTube channel, I broadcasted LIVE directly from San Diego. If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter you may have seen a few more LIVE broadcasts from the San Diego Ho'olaule'a.

Uncle Kamaka Brown, the Creative Director at SIN Radio, Uncle Kevin Weidemeyer, and yours truly also broadcasted LIVE from the Sandwich Islands Network radio booth throughout the entire weekend and let me tell you, there was no shortage of entertainment! And like I said, we are just getting started!

You won't want to miss them!

We are also presenting a fabulous Hawaiian Feather Pua workshop coming up this month in May, so you'll want to check that out too.

Speaking of which, Uncle Kamaka Brown and I had the absolute joy of speaking with Kumu Hulu   Lokelani Reichert who is the Kumu (teacher) of the Hawaiian Feather Pua workshops. We learned more about her quest to perpetuate the almost forgotten craft of feather Pua making.

Kamaka Brown, Annie Rivera, and Kumu Hulu Lokelani Reichert
Kumu Lokelani is very passionate about keeping the art form alive and thriving. She really does give so much of her heart to do so, too. When we met with her, you can feel her passion and her love for the art as it just radiated through the way in which she spoke about it.

I'm thrilled to have spoken with such a beautiful person. She is a legend in her own time.

EPISODE 26 - Annie Talks with Megan Soliah, Vice President of Production Resources at Stone Management Inc. | Staying True to Yourself and Having the Patience to Reach Your Goals

Lately, I have been talking with various entrepreneurs and startup companies and learning about their career moves and where they see themselves in the next coming years. So, for this episode, I wanted to take a slight turn and talk about working your way up the ranks in an organization.

My next guest on Annie Talks, Episode 26, is this super awesome gal who I met a few years ago who has kept true to herself and worked her way up the ranks, earning her the title of Vice President of Production Resources at Stone Management Inc.

Megan Soliah began her career at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., stage managing such productions as A Dance Celebration with Mikhail Baryshnikov and The Kennedy Center Open House. She transitioned from stage to film and television and brings with her over 10 years of experience in production coordinating and product placement having worked for Twentieth Century Fox Television, the Fox Network, NBCUniversal Television and Universal Pictures. Some of her more notable projects she's been involved with include 24, American Idol, Parenthood, The Bourne Legacy, The Fast & The Furious franchise, Fifty Shades of Grey and Jurassic World.

She has a great story to tell and is an inspiration to many young women and young professionals.

Here are my takeaways from talking with Megan:

It may sound cliche, but there's positively truth to the saying, "Hard work pays off," and in Megan's case, it certainly has! She stayed true to herself, she knew where she had been which set the course for where she wanted to be -- her goals. She also talked about having patience because you'll get to your goal -- but while on your journey to achieving your goal, don't forget to stop and smell the roses along the way. Enjoy life, enjoy your friends and family and make time for yourself. And most importantly and for you women out there -- embracing your girl boss and girl power mentality!

To reach Megan, you may email her at megan@stonemanagement.net

EPISODE 22 - Annie Talks with Carson High School 'Beauty and the Beast' cast, Director Marcia Barryte, Principal Dr. Windy Warren, Los Angeles Unified School District Sr. Executive Director Dr. Rory Pullens, and many more

I recently visited my alma mater, Carson High School, where the Drama department presented Disney's "Beauty and the Beast." It was a great closing performance and I met some of the cast, members of the production team, and other wonderful people.

I spoke with Director Marcia Barryte, and it is evident, through her dedication and passionate efforts, she helped put Carson High School back on the map with a much-needed Performing and Media Academy program. With the help and support of the parent volunteers, Principal, Dr. Windy Warren, and Los Angeles Unified School District Senior Executive Director of Arts in Education, Dr. Rory Pullens, the program continues to flourish and produce quality shows. More importantly, it has sparked the interests of many students, many who have never performed before, but who have discovered a newfound love for theater arts.

Choreographer Ray Garcia (original Tony Award-winning Broadway musical "Rent") and Vocal Director Jolly Rodriguez talked about watching the students grow from Day 1, reflecting on how much they have improved and flourished, and more importantly, how much the program has boosted confidence levels.

Theater Arts also promotes the importance of academics. As with any curricular activity, students must maintain a certain GPA in order to participate, therefore education is clearly the number one priority at Carson High School.

I am proud of Carson High School! It was here I began my musical theater career starring as Kim McAfee in "Bye Bye Birdie" and Daisy Mae in "Li'l Abner." I was also involved in Vocal Jazz, a small vocal group that performed in several programs and participated in competitions. I am especially proud to have been a part of a reputable sisterhood called the "Bannergirls," a 12-member auxiliary squad who carried the shiny "CARSON" sign proudly at parades and performed at all football games during pre- and halftime shows. Together with the entire Carson High School Blue Thunder Marching Band and Auxiliary Units, we competed and won championships in regional and statewide competitions.

Returning to the campus to watch the closing performance of "Beauty and the Beast" brought back wonderful memories of my time at Carson High School. They were some of the best years of my life. Without the arts and music programs, I wouldn't have made lifelong friends. I likely would not have pursued my passion and love for musical theater in college and thereafter.

It goes without saying how truly important the Performing Arts and Media Academy at Carson High School is necessary and valuable in helping to transform lives!

    Please support the arts!

EPISODE 18 - Annie Talks - My Favorite Podcasters in February 2018

In Episode 18 of Annie Talks, I wanted to try something a little different. I have a segment on my YouTube channel called "My Favorites" -- and they're different things for that given month. Things like: favorite movie, favorite show, favorite podcaster, favorite YouTuber, favorite foods, etc.

So, specific to the podcast audience, I thought it would be nice to have a "Favorite Podcaster" of the month. In actuality, I started listening to these favorites toward the end of 2017. They are the go-to podcasters that I listen to on a daily basis, particularly for their content.

I hope in some small way, that I could contribute to the world by influencing others to listen to the types of podcasts that I listen to.

I don't know how long each of these episodes will be each and every month, but I guess we'll test the waters in this maiden voyage of a series. So this is the first of what I hope to be a monthly series simply titled "My Favorite Podcasters of the Month," and so without further adieu, here are my favorite Podcasters for the month of February.

    1) So, here's a podcaster that I mentioned more recently in one of my YouTube videos. This podcaster is Frank Buckley Interviews. Frank Buckley is the KTLA 5 Morning News anchor seen Monday through Friday from 7 - 10 a.m. in Los Angeles. I think the reason I enjoy Frank Buckley Interviews so much is primarily because of the people he interviews. I mean first of all these are high profile people, celebrities, authors, athletes, etc. I mean, guess when you're a prime-time news anchor, you can have whoever you want on your podcast, right?

All kidding aside, he really does have great interviews on the podcast. Recently he interviewed actor George Takei, known best for his role of Hikaru Sulu on the USS Enterprise on the original show "Star Trek." George Takei is also starring in the musical "Allegiance" at the Aratani Theater at the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in downtown Los Angeles. I actually saw George perform in "Allegiance" right around the time it had opened in New York City, a Broadway original with then co-star Lea Salonga. It was truly an amazing performance by both actors. I remember attending the performance with my good friend Nikki, and between the two of us and the many hundreds of theater-goers, there was not a dry eye in the theater! I kid you not.

Frank Buckley Interviews has awesome guests on his show that a small-time fish in a large pond like me can only dream of having on my show one day. He had Jimmy Jam, who as you know, along with co-producer Terry Lewis wrote and produced Janet Jackson's first album. In that particular podcast, Jimmy Jam talks in detail about that experience and what all transpired behind-the-scenes while working with Ms. Jackson herself. This was one of my favorite episodes on Frank Buckley Interviews. There were so many more favorites including an interview with the legendary voice of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Mr. Vin Scully himself.

So, if you're like me and love to hear these deep conversations with legendary greats, or celebrities, and other high profile public figures, I recommend downloading and listening to Frank Buckley Interviews.

    2) My next favorite podcast of the February is a show I first downloaded way back in October or November 2017 and didn't actually start listening more intently until this year beginning in January. First of all, this podcaster is living the dream in the beautiful, picturesque, beachfront islands of Puerto Rico! Yep, way to make me jealous man! He is the founder, creator, and host of Entrepreneurs on Fire and calls his listeners Fire Nation -- I'm talking about none other than John Lee Dumas.

Entrepreneurs on Fire, also known as EonFire, is such an inspirational podcast and JLD features so many cool guests who are indeed entrepreneurs themselves who have built an empire from the ground up and oftentimes lend their expertise with tips and tricks on how to get started with your own ventures.

So, by listening to JLD and EonFire and all the great tips shared by his guests, you start to develop ideas of your own.

Now, I heard a statistic recently that podcasts in 2018 alone, let alone how well it did in 2017, and the years previous; but the statistic showed that podcasts are growing exponentially -- not just the number of podcasts popping up every single day, but rather, the number of people listening to podcasts is growing exponentially. In fact, for commuters, especially here in California, people spend more time commuting to and from work, to school, or spend more time in their cars or modes of transportation commuting from point A to point B, then maybe point C, or D; you get my drift? They are listening to more podcasts while on their commute, they're listening to podcasts while at the gym, working out, walking their dogs, or at their desks at work. It's a happening thing and it's not going away. Podcasts are here to stay!

If you are an entrepreneur, whether you're a start-up business, or you're an entrepreneur and want to stay connected with other entrepreneurs, or need a little inspiration and motivation, I recommend Entrepreneurs on Fire hosted by John Lee Dumas. JLD shares his own story on how he got started, and he collaborates with other entrepreneurs in hosting webinars and online courses. His podcast is worthy of listening to and following.

    3) For my last Favorite Podcaster of the month of February, I have been listening to The Gary Vee Audio Experience. He is Gary Vaynerchuk, New York Times bestselling author of the new book "Crushing It," which I have yet to get. I have one of his books called "Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook" which talks about how to tell your story in a noisy social world. Gary Vee, as he's known as, is an American-Belarusian entrepreneur, and business mogul. He has a strong social media presence on YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and he is the founder, CEO and owner of VaynerMedia. Gary is in high demand as a public speaker worldwide. He is a serial entrepreneur and has been an early investor in companies such as Twitter, Tumblr, Venmo, and Uber.

Gary Vee is so popular he's known in many industries from Fortune 500 companies and in the music industry. Athletes, celebrities, talk show hosts all know about GaryVee.

I was listening to a podcast earlier today and he said something that struck a chord with me (and I'm not quoting verbatim, but rather paraphrasing here), he said:

He became successful by basically being himself. He said, "When I did me, the world came to me." So, as we find ourselves, constantly trying to find the next meal ticket, hustling, and trying to prove ourselves to our boss, our colleagues, our clients, or customers, once you just be yourself, be you, the world will eventually accept you for you are. They may even want to become like you, or become your friend, gravitate to you!

GaryVee may be a bit rough around the edges, kinda street smart, but honestly, put aside the roughness, you'll see the successful man he is.

I remember someone once told me, "Don't listen to the way I'm saying it, but rather listen to what I'm saying."

Same concept applies...he'll be the first to say it, he curses a lot. He knows that...but once you get past all of that and hear the sound advice he gives, he's pretty motivational and inspirational.

One of the things I like about Gary is he's evolving. What do I mean by that? He's dynamic and changes with time. Technology is so advance and is advancing every day...I'm in the know of most technology, but I'll be the first to admit, I don't know a lot of stuff still. Gary is forward thinking and always looking ahead of what's to come. He is jumps on that early adopter train when he sees a good thing coming down the pike.

Must be nice! If I had his fortune, I would likely be doing the same thing. He had so much knowledge we all have so much to gain from his knowledge. I love that he likes to share his successes, his ideas, his tips and tricks. One more thing about Gary is there is no one-way cookie cutter way of doing things in his eyes. When you listen to him talk with millennials, young people or other Podcasters, I am always listening for a common denominator in the things he tells them. And what's interesting is you don't hear it. For every person he speaks to, no matter who they are, it's different, dynamic and specific to that person. He'll have advice or suggestions tailor-made to that individual. I think that's what I also enjoy most about Gary is that he listens to the individual and has some sort of nugget advice specific to that individual's scenario. He'll tie that in somehow with experiences of his own, but it always seems as though there's a message that is much more meaningful to that individual -- and it could be just as meaningful for me, or other listeners, etc.

So, The GaryVee Audio Experience is another one of my favorite Podcasters for the month of February.

You can always take the podcast with you on the road and listen anytime, any place, and on any device. Download today from #iTunes, #iHeartRadio, #Google Play, #SoundCloud, #Stitcher, #Spreaker, or #PlayerFM.

EPISODE 17 - Annie Talks with Zumba instructor Dawn Martin

My guest on Episode 17 of Annie Talks is Dawn Martin, Zumba instructor who was originally from New York and now resides in Connecticut. Dawn and I became Facebook friends over the past few years through mutual friends. We've kept in touch through social media and I began to see many of Dawn's posts revolving around fitness. She's not only a Zumba instructor, but she's also an avid runner. Two things that are near and dear to my heart -- Zumba and running.

    Zumba instructor Dawn Martin
Dawn told me that she "loves the energy & enthusiasm that Zumba brings because everyone can do it, no matter what their fitness level." One thing she hopes as an instructor, is that "every one of her class participants to have had SO much fun working out that they'll say 'Gee, class is over already?' "

Dawn also says, "The more that come spread the Zumba love, the merrier!"

I think there's so much that we all can learn from Dawn, not just about fitness, health or wellness, but how to be more confident, and find ways to boost our own self-esteem. You'll see that she is not only one that exudes confidence, but also one who empowers each one of us to dig deeper within ourselves to be the best YOU, the best PERSON we all can be!

EPISODE 15 - BLACK HISTORY MONTH - Annie Talks with Monikalynn Lehua Hawkins on what Black History Month means to her

For this Celebration Awareness series, we recognize the entire month of February as BLACK HISTORY MONTH and we celebrate those who have paved the way and pioneered for African-Americans who follow in their footsteps.

On this episode #15 of Annie Talks, I had the privilege of speaking with Monikalynn Lehua Hawkins on what Black History Month means to her.

Me and my Kumu Lehua Hawkins
I met Monika toward the end of 2017. To me, she is referred to as "Kumu Hula" which is "master teacher in the art of Hula," the word "Kumu" meaning "source" in Hawaiian.

Monika is a strong, empowered biracial woman, born to an African-American father and a Hawaiian mother. She shares what Black History Month means to her, but also shares what it means to be Hawaiian. She talks about her experiences growing up in a biracial household, the stereotypes and stigmas she and her family faced on both sides of the spectrum while identifying with the best of both worlds culturally.

EPISODE 13 - Annie Talks with Five-Time Emmy Award-Winning Percussionist Emedin Rivera

In Episode 13 of the Annie Talks podcast, my guest is five-time Emmy Award-winning percussionist, Emedin Rivera -- no relation at all, in case you were wondering.

Five-time Emmy Award-winning Percussionist Emedin Rivera

Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, Emedin started playing the bongos at the tender age of 8 years old, due largely in part to his father and uncle who also played the bongos in Puerto Rico.

The way in which Emedin plays percussions is mesmerizing as he blends Latin Caribbean with African, Fusion, merengue, salsa, etc...you name it, he plays it.

Emedin has recorded with heavyweights in the music industry such as Harry Belafonte, Gregory Hines, Ben E King, Dave Samuels, Latoya Jackson, Vicky Sue Robinson, and the list goes on.

Emedin has also recorded LIVE with Larry Coryell, Bob James, Chuck Mangione, Rick Cua, Denise Williams, and that list goes on and on.

Emedin is no stranger to music, as you can tell from this impressive list of credits, but he has also "invented" a new type of instrument (with the help of master craftsmen Matthew Smith of Ritmo percussion) which you'll learn more about in the podcast.

Be sure to visit his website at www.EMEDINRIVERA.COM, where you can find out more information about the release date for his new record, view his videos, sample his music, and see photos. Or you can check out my website at www.AnnieTalks.com where I will also update Emedin's upcoming release date and more information.

Alphonso always has a positive spin on taking challenges and turning them into opportunities to adjust, rather than conform to the norm. This philosophy is the key factor in what sets himself apart from others.

He has demonstrated a strong work ethic in all that he does, and I can certainly attest to that, having seen first hand his dedication in all performances and any leading or supporting role he lands. He also shares tips for aspiring actors to know, but above all else, the most important lesson is to BE YOURSELF.
